RARE Vintage SPUTNIK USSR Mechanical Space Watch

Unique Rotating Planet Sub-Second Disc / Caliber Vostok 2603

Commemorative Space Race Design / Made in USSR (Chistopol)

Fresh Modern Dial Replacement / Fitted with New PU Leather Strap

It would be great find for any collector

Up for sale is an extraordinary collectible piece of Soviet Space Race horology – the legendary Sputnik (Спутник) mechanical wristwatch. Created to honor the world's first artificial satellite launched by the USSR in 1957, this model features one of the most creative sub-second displays in vintage watchmaking: a small printed disc representing a satellite orbiting the Earth as seconds tick by.

To give this historic watch a fresh, pristine display, the original damaged dial has been professionally replaced with a brand-new, high-quality modern reproduction dial featuring two-tone gold and white finish with gold markers. Powered by a robust in-house Vostok (ChChZ) 2603 manual-wind movement with sub-seconds. Fitted with a clean acrylic crystal and a new PU leather strap, running strong and ready to wear!

DEFECTS: Honest small traces of use and age patina on the metal case as expected from an authentic vintage timepiece. Dial has been replaced with a brand-new reproduction.

HISTORY & LORE

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1 into Earth's orbit, marking the beginning of the Space Age. To celebrate this historic triumph, Soviet watch factories produced limited commemorative watch models named "Sputnik".

Manufactured by the Chistopol Watch Factory (later known as Vostok), the Sputnik watch quickly became legendary due to its unique sub-second indicator: instead of a traditional hand, a transparent disc with a red satellite or globe revolves above a map background, giving the illusion of a satellite orbiting the Earth in real-time. It remains one of the most sought-after thematic Soviet space watches among horological collectors worldwide.

RECOMMENDATIONS

All Antique and vintage watches are mechanical. Repairs require precision, so please handle this historical artifact with care.

  • Vintage mechanical watches should not be beaten or dropped - shocks can damage the balance staff.
  • Vintage watches are generally NOT waterproof. Protect your timekeeper from direct contact with water, heavy rain, or high humidity.
  • If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust.
  • Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. Stop winding as soon as you feel the natural resistance tightening up.
  • When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only to prevent stress on the gear train.
  • Every 2-3 years it is recommended to service, clean, and oil vintage watches to keep them running accurately for decades to come.
  • Keep your watch away from strong magnetic fields (large speakers, modern computers, magnets) since magnetic exposure can alter the balance spring performance.
  • Vintage mechanical watches naturally experience a daily deviation error of up to a few minutes. An accuracy of +/- 3 to 5 minutes a day is considered excellent for a classic timepiece.
