Miniature Caliber Chaika 1301 / Elegant Cocktail Design

It would be a marvelous addition to any collection of vintage Soviet timepieces or a unique mid-century jewelry accessory

Up for sale is a genuinely authentic, elegant, and beautifully preserved Chaika (Чайка) ladies mechanical watch, crafted in the USSR during the golden era of Soviet watchmaking. This dainty cocktail watch features a classic design that seamlessly doubles as an elegant jewelry piece on the wrist.

The watch features a beautiful, compact case heavily AU gold-plated (proudly carrying the official Soviet "AU" hallmark stamp on the case profile) and comes paired with its gorgeous original matching gold-plated bracelet. The clean, classic dial is fully signed in Cyrillic, featuring the "Chaika" name, "17 Jewels" indicator, and the historic "Made in USSR" (Сделано в СССР) mark at the bottom. Inside beats the true star of the watch: the ultra-compact, in-house Chaika Caliber 1301 manual-wind mechanical movement with 17 ruby jewels. It represents a masterclass in micro-engineering from the Uglich Watch Factory. The watch is fully operational, recently serviced, and ready to wear or gift!

DEFECTS: Good vintage condition. Shows honest, minor cosmetic traces of time and light hairline scratches/slight wear on the gold-plated finish of the case and original bracelet from careful previous use. The acrylic crystal is in clear, solid condition and offers excellent visibility.

HISTORY & LORE: THE SEAGULL OF UGLICH

The history of the Chaika (which translates from Russian as "Seagull") brand is deeply poetic and closely tied to Soviet national pride. Named in honor of Valentina Tereshkova — the first woman in space, whose official radio call sign during her historic 1963 Vostok 6 mission was "Chaika" — the brand became synonymous with elegant, reliable, high-precision ladies' timepieces manufactured at the Uglich Watch Factory.

While most factories specialized in bulkier men's military or dress designs, Uglich pushed the technical envelopes of extreme miniaturization. Developing movements like the Caliber 1301 required immense watchmaking mastery, assembling 17 functional ruby jewels and a complete mechanical shockproof balance train inside a movement measuring barely over a centimeter across. The official "AU" mark on the case denotes genuine Soviet heavy gold plating, designed to last for lifetimes. Today, these vintage pieces serve as highly sought-after cultural tokens of mid-century Soviet engineering excellence.

RECOMMENDATIONS

All Antique and vintage watches are mechanical. Repairs require precision, so please handle this historical artifact with care.

  • Vintage mechanical watches should not be beaten or dropped - shocks can easily damage the delicate miniature balance staff.
  • Vintage watches are generally NOT waterproof. Protect your timekeeper and its bracelet from direct contact with water, heavy rain, swimming, or high humidity.
  • If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust.
  • Winding any mechanical watch too tightly may break the internal mainspring. Stop turning the crown as soon as you feel the natural physical resistance tightening up.
  • When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only to safeguard the safety of the delicate gear train.
  • Every 2-3 years it is recommended to service, clean, and oil vintage watches to maintain their mechanical performance over decades.
  • Keep your watch away from strong modern magnetic fields (large speakers, laptops, magnets) since magnetic exposure can cause the hairspring to temporarily stick.
  • Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed.
  • Vintage mechanical watches naturally experience a daily deviation error of up to a few minutes. An accuracy of +/- 3 to 5 minutes a day is perfectly normal and considered excellent for a classic miniature timepiece.
